Auricular Acupuncture
Auricular acupuncture was created in 1957 by a neurologist named Dr. Nogier. In his work, he mapped how the nervous system branches throughout the body, creating microcosms (small areas which represent and connect to the rest of the body).
The ear is a major hub for blood vessels and nerves, and Dr. Nogier focused on creating a map on the ear for all the spots which correlate to the rest of the body. This map can be applied to all ear types and sizes, as it follows the overall structure of the nervous system. Using this map, ear needling can influence the rest of the body, reducing stress and pain while also treating deeper issues, such as organ dysfunction, insomnia, depression, metabolic diseases and cravings.
Today, auricular acupuncture is used in hospitals and even on battlefields, treating pain from trauma, surgery and labor. A common protocol called the NADA protocol, (named after the National Acupuncture Detox Association), is used with other therapies for addiction and trauma treatment. This protocol features what are called “master points”, or areas which have the strongest effect on the body. The five points in the ear used during this treatment are used to address a variety of concerns, and regular treatment can be considered a nervous system reset.
Because of its small area of treatment, auricular needling is perfect for patients who are needle sensitive, have reactive nervous systems, or in settings where a patient might not be able to undress.
When seeing your acupuncturist, you might have needles placed in your ears, which stimulate a strong relaxation response. Many patients even fall asleep.
